U.S. Position on Candidate
to be Elected Secretary General of the
Organization of American States
January 5, 2005
***** The United States is pleased that former President Francisco
Flores is officially a candidate to be Secretary General
of the Organization of American States. The U.S. continues
to support a consensus candidate from Central America, preferably
a former president, to hold the leadership position in the
hemisphere's most important multilateral organization.
We
hold in high esteem the three candidates who are seeking
to become the Secretary General of the Organization of
American States. We will continue to consult with other member
states
to seek a consensus candidate, which will allow an election
to take place as soon as possible.
