US and El Salvador signed agreement for ILEA

US Ambassador H. Douglas Barclay and Minister of Governance Rene Figueroa signed an agreement for the creation of the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) for Latin America. The agreement needs to be ratified by the Salvadoran Legislative Assembly.
ILEA will train police officers from all over the Western Hemisphere to protect and serve better their own citizens. The U.S. has created such academies around the world to combat international drug trafficking, organized crime, and terrorism through strengthened international cooperation. The first ILEA was opened in Budapest, Hungary in 1995. Other ILEAS were later establsihed in Bangkok, Thailand (1999) and Gaborone, Botswana (2001).
