U.S. Ambassador Meets with Salvadoran Political Party Leaders
October 23, 2006
*****
U.S. Ambassador H. Douglas Barclay invited leaders of all political parties represented in the Salvadoran Legislative Assembly to discuss how to confront violent crime problem that threatens to set back Salvadoran democracy and economic development.
The Ambassador sought the legislators’ views on prospects for quick passage of legislation that will give the police and prosecutors the tools they need to build cases against suspected criminals that will lead to convictions in the courts and incarceration, under the rule of law.
He challenged the party leaders to put aside their political differences and come together to devise a unified and comprehensive anti-crime strategy for the good of the country, as he had expressed in his speech at an event organized by think tank FUSADES on October 16.
