Remarks for Ambassador H. Douglas Barclay
December 25, 2006

*****

Ambassador Barclay spends Christmas with Salvadoran troops in Iraq

It is an honor for me to be here in Iraq with all of you to recognize the work that you are doing for the Iraqi people. I could not leave El Salvador without coming here to thank you in person for everything that you have done.

As the Ambassador of the United States in El Salvador for the last three years, I can tell you that I feel proud to have witnessed the work carried out by all the Salvadoran soldiers in Iraq. I know that it is hard to be away from your families at Christmas. It is a privilege to be here in your company and to be able to share at least a moment during this holiday.

I can assure you that all the members of the Cuscatlán Battalion have won the hearts of the Iraqi people and you have brought honor to El Salvador around the world. I know that you are aware that all Salvadorans feel extremely proud of the work you have carried out. Salvadorans know very well that freedom is not free.

You should also feel very proud of the role you are playing to assure a more stable and peaceful Iraq. You have earned the respect of the entire Coalition and the deep appreciation of the Iraqi people. El Salvador has been an outstanding member of the Coalition in the Iraqi Freedom Operation for the last three years. In seven consecutive rotations, you, the soldiers of the Cuscatlán Battalion, have done your work bravely and effectively in reconstruction and humanitarian tasks.

On behalf of President Bush, the Armed Forces of the United States and the American people, I want to thank you from my heart for your sacrifice and that of your families, especially in these holidays. You have placed your lives at risks in order to help Iraq – at the cost of the lives of some of your fellow soldiers.

Rest assured that all your sacrifices are recognized throughout the world. It an honor to be with you. Thank you so much for all your work.
