As the Opening Ceremony approaches, the U.S. Embassy’s Consular Section is working closely with the Olympic Committee of El Salvador, Comité Olímpico de El Salvador (COES), to send 20 members of the Salvadoran Olympic Team to participate in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games.
COES has long enjoyed a close relationship with The United States Olympic Committee, and several Olympic athletes from El Salvador have been conducting the final stages of their training at U.S. facilities. Consul General Carl Cockburn and COES President Eduardo Palomo worked together to ensure the travel needs of the team were met throughout the training and qualifying stages prior to their departure to Beijing.
The 2008 Salvadoran Olympic team is the largest group of athletes sent by El Salvador to compete in the Olympics since the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games. The Salvadoran team will complete in nearly a dozen sports.
